Battle of the Badges: How Renton’s Stephanie Hynes Sparks Community Spirit

by Renton Chamber of Commerce Staff on November 14, 2024

Spotlight on Renton Police Department’s Battle of the Badges and Community Hero Stephanie Hynes

The Renton Police Department is more than a public safety team; it's a vital part of our community's heart and soul, working to connect, inspire, and engage residents through a wide range of creative outreach events. Leading much of this work is Stephanie Hynes, the Police Communications and Community Engagement Coordinator, and a member of the Public Information Officer Team. Stephanie, a Seattle native and Garfield High School alum, returned to the Pacific Northwest after her time in Atlanta to begin a meaningful journey with the Renton Police Department seven years ago. She has since become a driving force behind programs that foster lasting relationships between officers and residents of all ages.

Stephanie’s Pandemic-Inspired Innovation: Battle of the Badges

In 2020, when the world shut down for COVID, Stephanie was determined to keep the community spirit alive, especially for the kids involved in the annual Shop With a Cop program. Traditionally, this program pairs officers with children for a holiday shopping experience, but with health protocols in place, Stephanie had to think outside the box. Rather than simply handing out gifts or resorting to a standard drive-through model, Stephanie challenged Renton’s officers to decorate their squad cars for an internal competition. She imagined families driving through to see beautifully lit-up, creatively decorated squad cars, bringing a bit of holiday cheer during a difficult year.

That first year, the event was held in a church parking lot in the Renton Highlands. Families drove through in amazement, and officers, too, felt the uplifting energy of the season. Neighbors came out to see the spectacle, expressing delight at the unexpected holiday display. And from there, it grew.

Expanding the Holiday Joy to All of RentonBattle of the Badges Flier

Seeing the joy this event sparked in both families and officers, Stephanie knew this could become a tradition the entire community could share. By the next year, Battle of the Badges had its own spotlight at the Renton Community Center. Stephanie extended invitations to other first responders, and 16 agencies joined in, creating elaborate displays far beyond “just decorating a squad car.” In addition to the festive atmosphere, the event hosted a food drive, making an even bigger impact on the community.

Each year since, Battle of the Badges has grown, with over 30 agencies confirmed for 2024. The event, inspired by Stephanie’s favorite show, The Great Christmas Light Fight, has gained regional attention, drawing participants from neighboring cities and creating holiday memories for thousands of Renton residents.

More Than Just Events: A Heart for Community

Stephanie’s role goes beyond seasonal events. She’s part of a dedicated team of Community Engagement Specialists, working alongside Sandra Havlik, known for organizing Renton’s Coffee with a Cop events and bridging connections with local businesses, and Meeghan Black. Together, they manage year-round programs that encourage understanding, respect, and support for law enforcement within the community.

Stephanie’s extensive projects include:

  • Youth, Teen, Business Leader, and Senior Police Academies – each designed to foster positive relationships with law enforcement across all age groups.
  • Red Ribbon Week in schools – focusing on drug prevention education and including engaging activities like poster contests.
  • Special Programs like Shred-a-thon, Drug Takebacks, Shop With a Cop, and the Advanced Academy, where residents learn about the deeper aspects of law enforcement work, from local to federal levels.

The Youth Academy, one of Stephanie’s proudest programs, brings together middle schoolers and officers from Renton and neighboring agencies, allowing kids to experience hands-on activities and learn about the life of a police officer. Activities like obstacle courses and team-building exercises provide a fun, educational experience that leaves a lasting impression.
