Eileen & Callie's Place: Empowering Young Women Leaving Foster Care

Eileen & Callie's Place: Empowering Young Women Leaving Foster Care

by Renton Chamber of Commerce Staff on June 17, 2024

King County – A local non-profit, Eileen & Callie's Place, is making a significant impact on the lives of young women transitioning out of the foster care system. Founded in 2014 by Dr. Natalie Ellington, the organization provides one-on-one mentoring to help these young women as they transition into adulthood.

Ellington's inspiration stemmed from her time serving on the King County Women's Advisory Board, where she learned about the challenges faced by young women leaving foster care. Determined to make a difference, she launched Eileen & Callie's Place, named after two women in her life who exemplified selfless service to others: her mother and mother-in-law.

Initially envisioned as a transitional housing program, the organization quickly recognized a deeper need for mentorship and long-term support. Working closely with the young women they serve, Eileen & Callie's Place developed a program to provide mentoring support until age 25. This comprehensive approach fosters genuine relationships, helps young women explore their potential, and equips them with the skills they need to succeed in life.

"Our goal is to empower, educate and coach these young women” says Ellington. "to help them discover their unique gifts, pursue their dreams, and build a future filled with hope and opportunity." Ellington quotes a Bible verse from Jeremiah 29:11 as the inspiration behind their goal:

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

Eileen & Callie's Place offers a unique and impactful service within our community. Their dedication to empowering young women leaving foster care strengthens our community by fostering brighter futures and promoting self-sufficiency. Their efforts are further complemented by initiatives like Celebrate 18!, a birthday party dedicated to young women aging out of foster care.

Foster alum shares a message at the annual Celebrate 18!
Celebrate 18! is a birthday party like no other. This party offers them a day filled with joy, resources, and support as they continue to transition into adulthood. These young women will enjoy shopping, salon pampering, and various activities designed to celebrate their milestones, achievements, and promote their growth.

We complete Celebrate 18! with the Celebrate 18! Benefit Dinner, where we invite the community to join in the festivities. This dinner is an opportunity for supporters, volunteers, and community members to come together, sing Happy Birthday, and show their solidarity for the young women and the important work we do. By participating, you help create a memorable and impactful experience for these deserving young women, honoring their journey and empowering them for the future.
